Overview

The area around the Outback town of Innamincka is located in South Australia, close to the border to Queensland. Being long inhabited by Aboriginal people, the first Europeans arrived in the region in 1845. In 1890, a small town existed here, which has since functioned as a service centre for the surrounding area. From the beginning of the 20th century, the area’s economy was predominantly based on cattle farming. Since the 1960s, tourism and the extraction of oil and natural gas have given the region new economic opportunities.

The town of Innamincka

The town of Innamincka has 44 permanent inhabitants. It lies on the banks of Cooper Creek, which carries water periodically. There are two permanent waterholes in the area of the town that are filled all year round. To the south of the river is a hilly area with steppe vegetation. To the north and west of the river, grasslands and bushlands predominate. Large parts of it are prone to flooding when the water level of Cooper Creek is high.

The town has the typical pattern of Australian outback towns. Besides few residential and commercial buildings, important utilities and other services exist for the surrounding farms and the 50,000 tourists visiting each year. These include a store, a hotel, a petrol station and two campgrounds on the river. There is an airport in the east of the town, which is used by the Royal Flying Doctors Service. The RFDS also operates a small hospital.

A few kilometres northeast of the city centre is Innamincka station, one of the largest cattle farms in South Australia (see above). It contains some residential and farm buildings and has an own air strip.
